How are you preparing to be a developer? If you’ve been working on algorithms and data structures, turn your attention here. The TentuPlay development team assesses candidates through a unique coding assessment, which it has created on its own. With the shortage of developers these days, many have been curious to know more about the background, implementation, and effectiveness of TentuPlay’s coding assessment. The development team, the creators of TentuPlay’s coding assessment, shared with us their experience.
Q. Why did the team create a unique coding assessment?
Developers are in high demand these days, and the supply has been on the rise. Many companies are trying their best to recruit outstanding developers, and likewise, developers are building their capacities to find the best match. TentuPlay’s recruitment notice has attracted many candidates with diverse strengths. To be specific, we are looking for individuals who show the following qualities.
The ideal team member is one with high potential, a short learning curve, and an engineering mind. He or she should be able to quickly understand the given tasks, devise ways of addressing issues, and have the capacity to actually solve problems.
It was difficult for TentuPlay to identify desirable qualities in candidates using general algorithmic tests. That’s why we created our own coding assessment.
Q. How is it different from existing coding assessments?
Candidates perform a simple project in an unfamiliar environment.
Think about the time when you first joined a company and were assigned to a project that you had no experience in. Developers cannot always rely on familiar tools. They should know how to apply basic concepts to various situations. This was the idea behind the coding assessment.
We look more at the problem-solving process than whether or not the project was a success.
Q. Do you have any tips on how to pass?
Developers have to continuously learn and familiarize themselves with new technology. As long as you know how to approach unknown domains, you will be able to boldly adapt to any new scenario. Think about how you learn new technology under general circumstances.
Q. How did candidates perceive the assessment?
We asked candidates to leave a short comment after the assessment. The project was only an hour long, but some candidates were able to understand TentuPlay’s priorities and what they could expect from the company. One comment read, “Most other tests are designed to see what candidates know. I had fun doing TentuPlay’s coding assessment because it tests my potential.” We were slightly discouraged when no one had passed after a month. But eventually, there were candidates who understood our intentions. We have been extremely satisfied with those recruited through the coding assessment.
The response was not always favorable. Some people withdrew after reading the guidelines or gave up midway. When they informed us of their decision, I felt more relieved than disappointed. Even if the candidates forced themselves to complete the project, they would not have been a good match with the company.
Q. Are you satisfied with the coding assessment? Any unexpected discoveries?
I was satisfied when the results were different from what I had been expecting based on the application documents. For example, there was a computer engineering major who failed, and a candidate who passed despite being newer in the field. Another point to note is that the passing rate is much higher for international candidates than for local candidates. This could be because of the large number of leading IT companies in Korea. In the future, I hope to see more Korean candidates who possess the mindset and characteristics expected of developers.
The candidates who recently passed the coding assessment will soon be joining the company. TentuPlay is continuing to recruit developers to support its rapid growth. We look forward to your application!
