Gamescom: The biggest community in the world
“The biggest community in the world” is the main theme of this year’s Gamescom. "South Pole Bebop" couldn't miss out on being a part of the biggest community in the world – the gaming community! After the early access launch last August, South Pole Bebop decided to open a B2C booth at Gamescom to connect with the audience. In the indie area, there were booths organized by various organizers such as Home of Indies, Indie Arena, etc., and we were located in one of the booths operated by these organizers.
"Into The Breach? I’m a big fan of it!"
This year, Gamescom showcased its reputation as the world’s largest game show with a massive scale. Many of the exhibitors and reporters I spoke to on site said, "Gamescom is at a different level compared to other game shows." The staff of South Pole Bebop, as they looked at the crowd rushing into the large hall, expressed our determination to actively introduce our game to those who enjoy "turn-based strategy games.”
Throughout the first day, our booth attracted numerous visitors who showed a keen interest in our game. Our multiplayer game, inspired by "Into The Breach," garnered enthusiastic responses from attendees who remarked that it was similar to "Into The Breach," expressed their fandom for the game, or found our PvP mode intriguing. We were appreciative of their recognition of our game's value and their admiration for it.
“South Pole Bebop”: Targeting Europe
"South Pole Bebop" is available in both English and Korean on Steam, making it easily accessible to German and European gamers who are familiar with English. Also, in Germany, in a survey asking about their favorite game genre, strategy games took first place with 34% (Statista, June 2024 survey). This preference for strategy games in Germany may explain why the turn-based strategy game "South Pole Bebop" has received a good response in Germany and other European countries.
"South Pole Bebop" sent bilingual staff fluent in German or English to gamescom to engage European gamers. The staff interacted with visitors, empathized with them, shared their opinions, and collected feedback, rather than just providing one-sided game explanations.
With Friends, Family, or Quietly by Themselves
During the five days of the Gamescom exhibition, "South Pole Bebop" encountered a diverse range of visitors. This included turn-based strategy fans who came with friends, parents happily observing their children enjoying the strategy game, and solitary individuals demonstrating great interest in the game. Those who tried "South Pole Bebop" expressed positive feedback such as "The game is well-made" and "It’s interesting that you can utilize various strategies." There were also concerns raised about how the game would generate revenue as it is released for “free”! Attendees who watched the tutorial appreciated the cute visuals, the overall game screen, and the high-quality UI. Our development team takes all feedback, including constructive criticism, seriously and intends to incorporate them into future game updates.
Achievements and Future Plans
After the exhibition opened on the 21st, the number of new users for "South Pole Bebop" significantly increased. Many people enthusiastically received postcards with QR codes at the event and accessed the game immediately through the QR codes. Around 70% of visitors participated in a formal demonstration for 20-30 minutes after going through the tutorial, demonstrating that our game is compelling and engages users. Some individuals who played against AI bots at the booth for over 40 minutes and ended with a draw in the 9th round commended the game, stating that it was truly enjoyable.
"South Pole Bebop" will support additional languages in the future and will also include more content to entertain users. After being featured at Gamescom, the game will be showcased at the Tokyo Game Show in September. We are excited to meet the audience at the Tokyo Game Show, which is considered the representative game show in Asia.
